We, the team behind Wheel Wagon, believe that public transportation should be affordable and accessible for as many people as possible. By enabling more Dutch citizens to travel further distances with their personal bicycle, Wheel Wagon introduces a new concept of multimodal traveling. 

 

The Wheel Wagon is a new type of train compartment which can transport up to 10 bicycles without decreasing the amount of passengers which can travel in the compartment. The bicycles can be stored in the train by parking them from the platform into its storage. This storage can be moved out from the left- and right side of the compartment, allowing the storage to be accessible regardless of on which side the train must be boarded/disembarked. The room for passengers which is lost due to this storage is compensated by replacing some chairs on the 2nd floor with comfortable standing places. This should not be a problem, for people who can climb stairs are usually able to half-sit for a time.

The concept of Wheel Wagon allows anyone with a bicycle to travel greater distances with their bike within the Netherlands. When making use of the Wheel Wagon users do not need to pay extra money for transportation, like renting an OV-fiets or buying a bus ticket, after arriving at their station of destination. Bringing your own bicycle in this way gives travelers more sense of self-reliance which enables travelers to undertake more meaningful activities. Traveling this way with your personal bicycle is very convenient for a lot of people in the Netherlands for almost everyone owns one.
